Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
