At least 13 people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
